Wireless Wisconsin

wireless
Overview
Travelers and businesses increasingly have come to expect and depend upon reliable and sustained wireless connectivity that is relatively free of interference. Wireless applications in the public environment are on the rise. The State of Wisconsin, the City of Madison, Dane County and the Dane County Regional Airport recognize that public wireless systems will evolve more in the future and have joined together in a substantial effort to provide wireless access to complement existing cellular services in Wisconsin.

The Request For Proposal (RFP) Process
This process has two goals. The first is to solicit and choose a vendor to design, install, operate, manage, maintain and market a common wireless access system for the city of Madison and the Dane County Regional Airport. Second is to establish a list of vendors willing to participate in creating a Wireless Wisconsin. Local governments throughout Wisconsin will be able to choose a vendor from this list to design, install, operate, manage, maintain and market a common wireless access system in their area. The vendors on this list must be willing to establish roaming agreements so citizens can pay once and roam anywhere there is a "hotspot" in Wisconsin.

  • Request For Proposal (RFP)

    • We are extending the response deadline by two weeks in order to encourage greater competition. Responses are now due January 24th, 2005 at 2:00 PM CST. Vendor interviews and notice of intent will also be pushed back. Further details will be posted on this site.

    • Clarification:
Questions have been raised by vendors regarding the availability of assets (buildings, light polls, etc) for mounting wireless antennas in order to provide adequate coverage in the phase one area.

In general, government buildings are spaced roughly evenly around the isthmus and are an easy location for antennas. In the case of dark spots not covered by mounting antennae on government buildings, the city will work with the vendor to find an asset, for example a lightpole, to cover that area and will help to work out issues associated with that site, such as electricity.
